I haven't posted anything about my job at Platial for a couple reasons. One is that I haven't had any time to do anything except work, hang out with Vigo, and see friends. The essentials. Another reason is that Platial has been way too buggy to be fun.
There's going to be an update today. The site is still lumpy, but it's starting to get fun.
Click on the more reading to see the map I made of part of the path along the Alewife Brook.
It looks like a very nice itinerary.

I wish I could see the text and the larger image just by hovering over the different points on the map, rather than clicking.
I didn't look at all the places. Too much clicking. Too slow. Too much fear of bugs.
At least I'd like to see the text in the places listed below the map, and have the image appear when I hover over the thumbnail.
</feature-request>
The image appearing when hovering is very nice. I've been thinking of doing that for my photos thingie.
Clicking: it's sooo Web 1.0.
I'm buying myself a no-button mouse, that's how cool I am.
And soon I'll be junking the mouse and just waving in the computer's general direction.

Clicking: you're right, it's a major stumbling block. Why is it necessary in this day and age? I want to make a version of metafilter where you don't have to click to see the cool sites.
Posted by: Chris Marstall at January 23, 2006 09:35 PMI think it's cool to read the comments Jason made on this map from Cognoshanty. Someone try commenting on one of the places from here. See how it feels.
Posted by: tracy Rolling at January 24, 2006 12:54 PMyeah it was neat that you included the whole thing inline, that was fun. How did you do that?
Posted by: Chris Marstall at January 24, 2006 01:57 PMYeah, well, it was really hard. I had to spend a lot of time thinking through the whole thing, you know. Probably four hours of coding there...
I'm learning a lot, but this kind of thing still seems like magic to me. It seems like having everything on the off-Platial site is easy. The harder part is going to be NOT having everything on a site for people who want maps without comments or other people's tags.
I posted a comment yesterday. It worked fine.
I just looked at the turtle. Very nice!
I'm still frustrated that I can't see your whole itinerary with comments and pictures in an easier way. In this case the map is a nice extra to visualize where it is you're talking about, but it's the text and pictures I mostly want to see.
I'd be psyched to do jogging/photo itineraries for Paris. I started to do one on feedmarker a while ago, but it's very limited and buggy. So I eagerly await Platial.
Posted by: Kai Carver at January 25, 2006 07:22 AMFrustrated Total Internal Reflection is what I was wishing for. The demo video has a nice soundtrack, too. How come computers come with only one pointing device, anyway? (via rw)
