When, in a rush of excitement brought about by the discovery that my browser can talk, I confessed I wanted to fuse with the Internet, Tracy said "gross". I understand the sentiment: inside my monitor seems like a cold place to be. Still, I can't help being fascinated by the fusion of mechanical and human space. Of which cars, houses, and clothes are, after all, but the most ordinary examples.
The Tangible Media lab at MIT goes a bit farther down that road: "The goal is to change the 'painted bits' of GUIs to 'tangible bits'".
I/O Brush is one cool idea. Super Cilia Skin is neat but useless. Dolltalk is a little freaky, as is ComTouch. And, of course, Topobo, a lovely toy idea, is today's MeFi du jour.
Posted by Kai Carver at October 3, 2004 11:09 AMYou call "harnessing wind currents for electricity" on the sides of a skyscraper useless?
Posted by: at October 4, 2004 12:35 PMWe saw Topobo in Tali and Kyle's Artbots show. It was less fun to play with than they make it look.
Posted by: at October 4, 2004 12:39 PMWhat's a GUI?
Posted by: tracy at October 4, 2004 12:40 PMA GUI, pronounced gooey, is a graphical user interface. Sorry. *hangs head in shame at using such a silly acronym untranslated*
Yes, I call harnessing wind currents on the sides of a skyscraper useless. I mean no, that would be great, except I doubt it's possible to produce any significant amount of electricity from currents around a building. But it's kinda cool to imagine a building bristling with wheat-like thingies.
